Bushranger Gardiner

Wednesday 11 January 1865, The Brisbane Courier

THE following is taken from the letter of our Sydney correspondent :-

On the old subject of bushranging, I quote the following from a Tamworth correspondence : -The children in the interior still play at bushranging, and bushranging still continues. There must be some black sheep in those parts harboring the villains, even allowing that the police always come ten minutes too late. I once informed you that Gardiner, on his way north, called at a little country inn not fifty miles from Tamworth, where he spent the night. I have spoken to the landlady since then, and said “Are you sure it was Gardiner?” ” Sure,” she replied, ” I knew him from a child.” “Didn’t you do anything towards having him arrested ?” “Not I; the man was paying for all he had ; what was it to do with me?” As Gardiner rode off next morning, she could not resist saying to two policemen “There goes Gardiner!” but they laughed at her, taking it as a joke.
