Gold at Hillgrove
Thursday 25 June 1857, The Sydney Morning Herald
The Armidale Express of the 13th says-Since our last we have been shown a sample of rough gold obtained on Hillgrove, at a spot about a mile and a half from the head station we believe. The gold was got by a shepherd boy, and was in conjunction with quartz, from which it had been hammered out. Hillgrove is 14 or 15 miles from Armidale ; and, as slate is plentiful in that locality, good shallow diggings are anticipated.
There is nothing worthy of remark from either the Rocky or Oban. Little in the way of prospecting can be done in such cold weather as we have had during the past few days.
